The Lord speaks of His divorcement of Israel and of the suffering and submission of the Messiah.  He closes this chapter with a comparison of those who fear the Lord with those who kindle their own fire.

What Does It Say?

1. Has God sold Israel? No. The Lord tells them, “Behold, for your ___________ have ye sold ____________.”

What Does It Mean?

1. The Lord is certainly referring to Israel in verse one when He speaks of putting her away (that is, divorcing her) and selling them into slavery.  To what events in Israel’s history is the Lord referring?  Is the putting away and selling permanent?
2. Verse five says, “The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.”  The opening of the ear probably refers to the Hebrew who willingly becomes a slave for life in Exodus 21:2-6 [2] If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. [3] If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him. [4] If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself. [5] And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free: [6] Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.

3. Verse six says, “I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.”  What events in the life of Christ are prophesied in this verse?  What are we told about the suffering of Christ here that is not recorded in the gospels?

What Does It Mean to Me?

1. The Lord promises to give us the tongue of the learned so that we can speak a word in season to him that is weary (v.4).  What a blessing that He helps us so?  He “wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.”  What does Isaiah mean by this statement?  What does God do for us morning by morning?  What should we expect from Him every morning?  See Lamentations 3:22-23 [22] It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. [23] They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

2. Who is the man who fears the Lord and obeys the voice of God’s servant, yet walks in darkness?  Do you ever feel that way?  Read verse ten and tell what God’s answer is for this man.  What can you do today to find God’s light?
