This chapter contains one of the most wonderful passages of prophecy concerning the Lord Jesus Christ in the Old Testament. His life, death, burial, and resurrection are all foretold and the message of salvation is proclaimed.

What Does It Say?

1. The question is asked: to whom is the ________ of the LORD revealed?
2. We saw the Saviour and esteemed Him stricken, smitten of _______, and ___________.
3. He opened not his mouth as He was brought as a _________ to the slaughter.
4. He was cut off out of the _________ of the ______________.
5. He made His grace with the _________ and with the ________ in his death.

What Does It Mean?

1. In referring to the Saviour, Isaiah says that He will grow up as a tender plant and as a root out of a dry ground (v.2). What does this tell us about the life of Jesus Christ on the earth? How does this compare with the prophecy quoted in Matthew 12:18-20 [18] Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. [19] He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. [20] A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.

2. Read verse six. In what ways are people like sheep? Start with the characteristic mentioned in this verse and see what else you can come up with.
3. Verse ten tells us that it pleased the Lord to bruise the Saviour. How could the sufferings of Christ on the cross please the Father? This is a great doctrine of the faith.

What Does It Mean to Me?

1. Verse two tells us that when we see the Saviour, “there is no beauty that we should desire him.”  To what does this refer? How does this view change after we know Jesus Christ as our personal Saviour?
2. In the sufferings of Christ, “he was despised, and we esteemed him not” (v.3).  To esteem means to value highly; to hold in high regard. In what ways can we esteem Christ today? What actions can we take to esteem Him?
