The Reigns of Rehoboam and Jeroboam

Scripture Passage: 
1 Kings 14:1-31

INTRODUCTION: Jeroboam and Rehoboam continue to sin against the Lord and the Lord continues to bring serious judgment against them. The lesson ends with both men dead and their kingdoms in spiritual disarray.

  1. THE REIGN OF JEROBOAM (1 Kings 14:1-20)
    1. Jeroboam Sent His Wife to Ahijah (1 Kings 14:1-5).
      1. The sickness of Abijah, Jeroboam’s son (1 Kings 14:1)
      2. The mission to Ahijah the prophet of God (1 Kings 14:2-3)

  2. THE REIGN OF REHOBOAM (1 Kings 14:21-31)

        1. He began to reign when he was 41 years old.
        2. He reigned over Judah for 17 years.
        3. He reigned in Jerusalem, the city chosen by God (Deuteronomy 12:5).

      2. The evil of Judah in Rehoboam’s reign (1 Kings 14:22-24)
        1. They did evil in the sight of the Lord (1 Kings 14:22).
        2. They provoked the Lord to jealousy with their sins (1 Kings 14:22).
        3. They sinned above all that their fathers had done (1 Kings 14:22).
        4. They built them high places, images, and groves (1 Kings 14:23).
        5. They allowed sodomites to continue in the land (1 Kings 14:24).
        6. They did according to the abominations of the nations around them (1 Kings 14:24; Leviticus 18:26-29; Deuteronomy 18:9).
    2. Rehoboam Suffered Defeat at the Hand of Shishak (1 Kings 14:25-28).
      1. The attack of Shishak, the king of Egypt (1 Kings 14:25-26)
        1. In the fifth year of king Rehoboam (1 Kings 14:25)
        2. He removed the treasures of Jerusalem (1 Kings 14:26).
          1. The treasures of the house of the Lord
          2. The treasures of the king’s house
          3. The shields of gold which Solomon made
      2. The response of king Rehoboam (1 Kings 14:27-28)
        1. He replaced the gold shields with brass ones (1 Kings 14:27).
        2. He committed the shields to the chief of the guard (1 Kings 14:27).
        3. The shields were daily returned to the guard house (1 Kings 14:28).
    3. Rehoboam Ended His Reign in Judah (1 Kings 14:29-31).
      1. The rest of his acts in the book of Chronicles (1 Kings 14:29)
      2. The continual war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam (1 Kings 14:30)
      3. Rehoboam died and was buried with his fathers (1 Kings 14:31).

CONCLUSION: Sin has far reaching consequences. Though the kingdoms are divided, they are united in their rebellion against the Lord. Many people with grave differences unite in sinning against the Lord. Both kingdoms reach a spiritual dearth like never before.
