INTRODUCTION: The first psalm describes the blessed man and contrasts him with the ungodly man. Psalm 32:1-2 [1] Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
[2] Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.
See All... tells us that the basis of all blessing in the life of man is forgiveness of sin. The first psalm tells us about the life of this blessed man.
- HIS REJECTION (Psalm 1:1Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
See All...) - The Wisdom of the World (Psalm 1:1Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

See All...). - Counsel: the recommendations of the world (Jeremiah 10:2Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.

See All...) - No association: he stands not (Proverbs 13:20He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
See All...). - Way: the path of their actions (Proverbs 4:19The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
See All...; Matthew 7:13-14 [13] Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: [14] Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
See All...) - Sinners: those who actively disobey God’s commandments (Genesis 13:13But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.
See All...) - The Wickedness of the World (Psalm 1:1Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
See All...) - No participation: he sits not (Psalm 26:4-5 [4] I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with dissemblers.
[5] I have hated the congregation of evil doers; and will not sit with the wicked.
See All...). - Seat: seat indicates permanence and full identification (Jeremiah 15:17I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation.
See All...). - Scornful: those who make a mockery of the things of God (Proverbs 21:24Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath.
See All...; Jude 1:18How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.
See All...) - Note: take note of the progression in this verse. It will help you to understand the way people turn from righteousness unto wickedness.
- The progression of interest
- Walking – still easy to walk away
- Standing – can begin to walk at any time
- Sitting – full commitment
- The progression of influence
- Counsel – listening to advice
- Way – trying the practices
- Seat – making the choice
- The progression of identity
- Ungodly – just leaves God out of his life
- Sinner – practices sin
- Scorner – makes a mockery of God and holy things
- HIS REJOICING (Psalm 1:2But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
See All...) - His Delight in God’s Word (Psalm 1:2But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
See All...; Job 23:12Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

See All...; 1 Timothy 4:15Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
See All...) - Definition: To meditate means to ponder; to reflect upon; to think deeply about. Some have used a cow chewing its cud as a picture of meditation. The cow is rechewing food that has already been eaten. When we meditate on scripture, we think deeply about something God has said in His word. We chew it over and over again in our mind until some new nourishment is found in it.
- The benefits of scriptural meditation:
- Perception of truth – Through meditation we digest the truths of God. This increases our understanding of God’s way and leads us to the path of wisdom (Psalm 119:99I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.
See All...). - Profit from scripture – Through meditation we apply the teachings of scripture to our hearts and lives. We are changed to our profit (1 Timothy 4:15Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
See All...). - Purity of heart – Through meditation we are kept from sin and are brought into a position of holiness with God (Psalm 19:13-14 [13] Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
[14] Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
See All...). - Prosperity in service – Through meditation our work for the Lord will be prosperous; we will accomplish that which He pleases (Joshua 1:8This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
See All...). - Prayer effectiveness – Meditation works as an aid to our prayer life (Psalm 5:1-2 [1] Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation.

[34] My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD.

See All...; 1 Peter 1:6-7 [6] Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: [7] That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
See All...). - Their roots reach for moisture (Hosea 14:5I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon.

[23] Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
See All...) - The fruit has a purpose (Genesis 1:29And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
See All...; Romans 6:21-22 [21] What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. [22] But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
