Christ is the Head

Scripture Passage:
Colossians 1:18

Introduction:

In the Bible we find that Jesus Christ is the Head of the Body, which is the Church.  If that is true then we ought to be able to look at the characteristics of the head in scripture and find that it points to some characteristics of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  Let’s take a look at some of these and see if we can see Jesus.

  1. The Head is a Place of Life
    1. The Physical Head (Genesis 40:16-19)
    2. Jesus Christ (John 14:6; John 15:5
  2. The Head is a Place of Blessing
    1. The Physical Head (Genesis 48:14-20; Proverbs 10:6)
    2. Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:13-14
  3. The Head is a Place of Joy
    1. The Physical Head (Isaiah 51:11)
    2. Jesus Christ (Romans 5:11; 1 Peter 1:8)
  4. The Head is a Place of Bearing Burdens
    1. The Physical Head (Genesis 40:16)
    2. Jesus Christ (1 Peter 5:7)
  5. The Head is a Place of Judgment
    1. The Physical Head (1 Kings 2:44)
    2. Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:13; 1 Peter 2:24; Hebrews 9:28)
  6. The Head is a Place of Salvation
    1. The Physical Head (Isaiah 59:17)
    2. Jesus Christ (Luke 2:11

Conclusion

As we have seen there are many correlations between the physical head and the Lord Jesus Christ, but this doesn’t just have to be a new little Bible study that we have done.  It ought to remind us that Jesus Christ has done and is doing so much for us.  Without Him we have no life.  Without Him we do not receive the blessings of God.  Without Him we would have sorrow and grief.  Without Him we have to bear our own burdens.  Without Him the judgment of God would be upon us.  Without Him we have no salvation.  One point that we did not mention tonight is that the head is a place of authority.  My question to you is, does this Lord that has done so much for you have authority in your life?  If not, there is no better time to surrender to Him than now.
