2 John 1:1-3 [1] The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;
[2] For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.
[3] Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
See All...
John’s Greeting
- THE PEOPLE INVOLVED (2 John 1:1The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;
See All...) - The Author
- Various uses of the word elder
- It can be a reference to age (1 Timothy 5:1-2 [1] Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
[2] The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
See All...). - It can be a reference to wisdom (Job 32:4-7 [4] Now Elihu had waited till Job had spoken, because they were elder than he.
[5] When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was kindled.
[6] And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and durst not shew you mine opinion.
[7] I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.
See All...). - It can be a reference to an office of leadership (Numbers 11:16And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.
See All...; Matthew 21:23And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?
See All...; Titus 1:5For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
See All...). - In the case of the Apostle John, all three apply.
- The purpose for using this title
- This title would emphasize John’s wisdom without harshly claiming absolute authority.
- John is dealing gently with the elect lady; he is correcting her with compassion.
- Compare this with the method implored by the Lord Jesus with the seven churches. He began with something they did right and proceeded to the things that needed correction.
- The Recipients
- The figurative interpretation of the elect lady and her children
- Some Bible students think that the elect lady is a church, her elect sister is a sister church, and her children are the members of and from the church.
- Although some good types may be drawn from this, there is no reason to believe that John was speaking metaphorically.
- The literal interpretation of the elect lady and her children
- This lady is called the “elect lady” (2 John 1:1The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;
See All...) and “lady” (2 John 1:5And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
See All...) - She has “children” (2 John 1:1The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;
See All..., 4). - She has an “elect sister” (2 John 1:13The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.
See All...). - Her “elect sister” has children (2 John 1:13The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.
See All...). - She was probably a prominent Christian lady known by John.
- The meaning of “elect”
- The word elect means chosen (Mark 13:20And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.
See All...). - Jesus Christ is God’s elect (Isaiah 42:1Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
See All...). - Our election
- Our election is based on the foreknowledge of God (1 Peter 1:2Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
See All...). - Our election is based on us being in Christ (Ephesians 1:3-6 [3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
[4] According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
[5] Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
[6] To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
See All...; Ephesians 1:12-13 [12] That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. [13] In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
See All...). - Our election is to be confirmed (2 Peter 1:10Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
See All...). - The elect acts as a synonym of the redeemed.
- The redeemed are called “God’s elect” (Romans 8:33Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.
See All...; Titus 1:1Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
See All...). - The redeemed are called the “elect of God” (Colossians 3:12Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
See All...). - The Love for the Elect Lady and Her Children
- Love in the truth
- This same greeting is found in 3 John 1:1The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
See All... to the “wellbeloved Gaius.” - The phrase “the truth” refers to that which is true.
- It can be God’s law (Psalm 119:142Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.
See All...). - It can be Jesus Christ (John 14:6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
See All...). - It can be God’s word (John 17:17-19 [17] Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
[18] As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
[19] And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
See All...). - It can be the gospel (Galatians 2:5To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.
See All..., 14; Colossians 1:5For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;
See All...). - We are told that “the truth is in Jesus” (Ephesians 4:21If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
See All...). - Therefore, that which is “in the truth” is in agreement with the word of God and Jesus Christ.
- To love someone in the truth would involve loving them according to the word, but more likely it refers to the basis of mutual love.
- Peter praises those to whom he writes for “obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren” (1 Peter 1:22Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
See All...). Their obedience to the truth gave them a sincere love for the brethren, but it also gave them a mutual reason for love to one another. - Philippians 1:5Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvelously: for I will work a work in your days which ye will not believe, though it be told you.
See All... refers to our “fellowship in the gospel.” - That is, we have a fellowship that is based on our mutual faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.
- Our mutual belief in this truth becomes a basis for our love to each other.
- Those who love the lady and her children
- Loved by John himself
- Loved by all those “that have known the truth”
- Our knowledge of the truth brings us into fellowship with others who know the truth.
- We ought to automatically love those who love Him and His word.
- THE IMPORTANCE OF TRUTH (2 John 1:2For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.
See All...) - For the Truth’s Sake
- Not only does John love the elect lady and her children in the truth, he also loves them for the truth’s sake.
- Love for the sake of obeying the truth
- Not only does John love them because they believe in the truth; he also loves them in order to obey the truth. He loves them because it fulfills the truth of God by obeying the command of Christ.
- Before His crucifixion, Christ gave this commandment to His disciples: “That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another” (John 13:34A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
See All...). - Love for the sake of propagating the truth (John 13:35By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
See All...) - The Presence of Truth
- The truth dwells with us.
- God’s word is truth (John 17:17Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
See All...) and we are to let the word of Christ dwell in us “richly in all wisdom” (Colossians 3:16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
See All...). - Because of the next phrase, it is more likely that this verse refers to the Holy Spirit.
- Jesus calls Him “the Spirit of truth” three times in His discourse on the coming of the Comforter (John 14:17Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
See All...; John 15:26But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
See All...; John 16:13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
See All...). - John had also earlier spoken of this aspect of the Spirit: “And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth” (1 John 5:6This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
See All...). - Other passages refer to the Spirit of God dwelling in the believer (Romans 8:9But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
See All..., 11; 1 Corinthians 3:16Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
See All...). 1 John 4:13Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
See All... states, “Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.” - The truth shall be with us forever.
- Whether through the word (John 17:17Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
See All...), or the Spirit (1 John 5:6This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
See All...), or Jesus (John 14:6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
See All...), those who know the Lord and dwell with Him will forever have truth with them. - But why does John make a point of this? He is establishing the importance of truth.
- It is one of the things that remains because it cannot be shaken (Hebrews 12:27And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
See All...). - It is one of the unseen things that is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
See All...). - It must be treated as highly important in the Christian life.
- THE BLESSINGS FROM ABOVE (2 John 1:3Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
See All...) - The Threefold Blessing
- A twofold blessing of grace and peace begins most of Paul’s epistles (Romans 1:7To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
See All...; 1 Corinthians 1:3Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
See All...; etc.), Peter’s epistles (1 Peter 1:2Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
See All...; 2 Peter 1:2Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
See All...), and the book of Revelation (Revelation 1:4John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;
See All...). - However, Paul used a threefold blessing of grace, mercy, and peace in the Pastoral Epistles—those he wrote to the young preachers (1 Timothy 1:2Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
See All...; 2 Timothy 1:2To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
See All...; Titus 1:4To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.
See All...). Evidently, preachers need a special element of mercy because of their special responsibilities to God. - This threefold blessing is only used in one other epistle—that of 2 John.
- Does it indicate a special need for mercy for the elect lady and her children? It probably does.
- She is compromising doctrine for the sake of getting along in love.
- The Nature of the Blessing
- Every believer has already received grace, mercy, and peace from God.
- Why is such a blessing given to those who have already received grace, mercy, and peace?
- The answer is found in the twofold application of these blessings.
- There is saving grace. There is also grace for serving. The same applies for mercy and peace.
- Grace
- Serving grace is God’s enabling for the believer.
- 2 Corinthians 9:8And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:
See All... states, “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.” Of this grace, the Lord told Paul, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
See All...). - God’s grace enables us to serve or suffer for Him. It is His sufficiency for the believer, for truly, “our sufficiency is of God” (2 Corinthians 3:5Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
See All...). - Mercy
- God’s mercy delivers us from hell. We are saved “according to his mercy” (Titus 3:5Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
See All...). - However, believers need a continued application of God’s mercy to deliver from earthly judgment for disobedience.
- We need the mercy of the Lord in order “to be faithful” (1 Corinthians 7:25Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.
See All...) and to “faint not” (2 Corinthians 4:1Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;
See All...). - We come boldly to the throne of grace to obtain mercy (Hebrews 4:16Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
See All...). - Peace
- At salvation, we receive the gift of “peace with God” (Romans 5:1Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
See All...) so that we are no longer his “enemies” (Romans 5:10For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
See All...). - But we may still deal with inward battles of the heart. God wants to give us peace here as well.
- We are to “let the peace of God rule” in our hearts (Colossians 3:15And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
See All...). - Then, the believer is promised, “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7
See All...). - The Source of the Blessing
- The blessing is said to be “from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.”
- This is the common form of this blessing. Galatians 1:3Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ,
See All... states, “Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ.” - The dual source emphasizes the unity of the Father and the Son. To receive from one of them is to receive from the other.
- The Son of the Father
- This is the only place in the English Bible where this exact phrase is used.
- Perhaps the closest to it is in John 1:18No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
See All... where Jesus is called “the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father.” - The title emphasizes special relationship. In this regard, there is only one Father and He has only one Son.
- In addition, they are connected in such an integral way that they cannot be separated.
- 2 John will later make the point that he who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.
- In his first epistle, John had made the point that those who denied the Son had also denied the Father (1 John 2:22-23 [22] Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
[23] Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
See All...). - The Blessing Founded in Truth and Love
- This completes the blessing. It gives a threefold blessing (grace, mercy, and peace) from a twofold source (Father and Son) by a twofold application (truth and love) to make a total of seven elements to the blessing.
- The balance between truth and love is the theme of this book.
- We need to act in love, but this love must not distort our stand for the truth.
- The key to the Christian walk in this epistle is to maintain both truth and love at the same time.
- Imbalance is obviously unacceptable to God (Proverbs 11:1A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.
See All...; Proverbs 20:23Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.
See All...; Genesis 49:4Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.
See All...; James 1:8A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
See All...). - God’s balance
- God is truth (Deuteronomy 32:4He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
See All...; John 14:6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
See All...). - God is love (1 John 4:16And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
See All...). - In the proper balance, God never compromises one characteristic for the implementation of the other. God is always love and God is always truth. As such He never departs from one to be the other.
Proverbs 28:24
Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer.
