Chapter 30

The Law of the Vow

  1. THE COMMAND OF THE LORD (Numbers 30:1)
    1. Presented to the Heads
    2. The Thing Which the Lord Commands
  2. THE VOW OF A MAN (Numbers 30:2)
    1. The Binding of the Soul
    2. The Bondage of His Word
  3. THE VOW OF A WOMAN IN HER YOUTH (Numbers 30:3-5)
    1. If a Woman Vow (Numbers 30:3)
      1. Binding herself by her vow
      2. Being in her father’s house in her youth
    2. If Her Father Hears (Numbers 30:4-5)
      1. And holds his peace (Numbers 30:4)
        1. Her vows shall stand.
        2. She hath bound her soul.
      2. And disallows her (Numbers 30:5)
        1. No vows shall stand.
        2. The Lord shall forgive her.
  4. THE VOW OF A MARRIED WOMAN (Numbers 30:6-8)
    1. If a Woman Vow (Numbers 30:6)
      1. Binding her soul
      2. Having a husband
    2. If Her Husband Hears (Numbers 30:7-8)
      1. And holds his peace (Numbers 30:7)
        1. Her vows shall stand.
        2. Her soul has been bound.
      2. And disallows her (Numbers 30:8)
        1. Her vows are of none effect.
        2. The Lord shall forgive her.
  5. THE VOW OF A DIVORCED OR WIDOWED WOMAN (Numbers 30:9-12)
    1. If a Woman Vow (Numbers 30:9-10)
      1. As a widow (Numbers 30:9)
      2. As a divorced woman (Numbers 30:9)
      3. In her husband’s house (Numbers 30:10)
      4. Binding her soul (Numbers 30:10)
    2. If Her Husband Heard it (Numbers 30:11-12)
      1. And holds his peace (Numbers 30:11)
        1. Her vows shall stand.
        2. Her soul has been bound.
      2. And disallows her (Numbers 30:12)
        1. Her vows are void.
        2. The Lord shall forgive her.
  6. THE POWER OF THE HUSBAND (Numbers 30:13-15)
    1. His Decision (Numbers 30:13)
      1. To establish the vow
      2. To make it void
    2. Holding His Peace (Numbers 30:14)
      1. Establishes her vows
      2. Confirms her vows
    3. Voiding the Vow (Numbers 30:15)
      1. After he heard her vow
      2. He shall bear her iniquity.
  7. THE CLOSING OF THE COMMANDS (Numbers 30:16)
    1. These are the Statutes
    2. Between
      1. A man and his wife
      2. The father and his daughter
  8. TYPOLOGY OF THE LAW OF THE VOW
    1. The Persons Represented
      1. The man
        1. A father or a husband
        2. Represents God
      2. The woman
        1. All the way from youth through the widow
        2. Represents the people of God from the dispensation of innocence throughout time
    2. The Action Represented
      1. The voiding of the vow
        1. Occurs when the man does not hold his peace
        2. The holding of peace is the same as withholding one’s word.
        3. God the Father sent His Word and did not hold His peace (John 1:1, 14).
      2. The bearing of the iniquity
        1. The voiding of the vow still required the responsibility of the man to bear the iniquity.
        2. Not only did the Lord void the vow but He also took care of bearing the iniquity.
