Balaam’s Last Prophecy (Continued)
- THE PERSON OF BALAAM’S PROPHECY (Numbers 24:17I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
See All...) (Continued) - The Sceptre Out of Israel

[17] And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;
See All...) - The Wise Men from the East (Matthew 2:1-2 [1] Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
[2] Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
See All...) - How did they know?
- Two prophecies
- Daniel’s prophecy (Daniel 9:20-26 [20] And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God;
[21] Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.
[22] And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.
[23] At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.
[24] Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
[25] Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
[26] And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
See All...) – provided timing - Balaam’s prophecy (Numbers 24:17I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
See All...) – provided information concerning the person - The location of these prophecies
- Daniel’s prophecy came in Babylon (Daniel 1:1-6 [1] In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
[2] And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
[3] And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;
[4] Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
[5] And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
[6] Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
See All...). - Balaam’s prophecy came on the eastern side of Jordan and he was a prophet from Mesopotamia (Deuteronomy 23:4Because they met you not with bread and with water in the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; and because they hired against thee Balaam the son of Beor of Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse thee.
See All...). - Both of these prophecies were provided and known in the eastern world.
- Why did they come?
- To worship the King of the Jews (Matthew 2:2Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
See All...) - To worship their King (Numbers 24:17I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
See All...) - What did they bring?
- Gold
- A type of royalty (Psalm 21:1-3 [1] The king shall joy in thy strength, O LORD; and in thy salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!
[2] Thou hast given him his heart's desire, and hast not withholden the request of his lips. Selah.
[3] For thou preventest him with the blessings of goodness: thou settest a crown of pure gold on his head.
See All...; Revelation 14:14And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle.
See All...) - A picture of the royal birth of the King of the Jews (Matthew 2:2Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
See All...) - Frankincense
- A type of prayer (Revelation 8:3-4 [3] And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.
[4] And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.
See All...; Psalm 141:2Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
See All...) - A priestly gift
- Myrrh
- A type of suffering and death (Mark 15:23And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.
See All...; John 19:39And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
See All...) - A picture of the sacrificial death of Christ
- I do not know for sure, but perhaps these men from the east understood about the death of this King because of Daniel’s prophecy (Daniel 9:20-26 [20] And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God;
See All...). - THE SLAUGHTER OF BALAAM’S PROPHECY (Numbers 24:17-19 [17] I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
[18] And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly.
[19] Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.
See All...) - The Corners of Moab (Numbers 24:17I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
See All...) - Partially fulfilled by David (Psalm 108:9-13 [9] Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe; over Philistia will I triumph.
[10] Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?
[11] Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? and wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our hosts?
[12] Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.
[13] Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.
See All...; 2 Samuel 8:2And he smote Moab, and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground; even with two lines measured he to put to death, and with one full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David's servants, and brought gifts.
See All...) - To occur again after David (Jeremiah 48:42-47 [42] And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he hath magnified himself against the LORD.
[43] Fear, and the pit, and the snare, shall be upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith the LORD.
[44] He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon it, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation, saith the LORD.
[45] They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon because of the force: but a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and shall devour the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones.
[46] Woe be unto thee, O Moab! the people of Chemosh perisheth: for thy sons are taken captives, and thy daughters captives.
[47] Yet will I bring again the captivity of Moab in the latter days, saith the LORD. Thus far is the judgment of Moab.
See All...; Isaiah 25:6-12 [6] And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined. [7] And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations. [8] He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it. [9] And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation. [10] For in this mountain shall the hand of the LORD rest, and Moab shall be trodden down under him, even as straw is trodden down for the dunghill. [11] And he shall spread forth his hands in the midst of them, as he that swimmeth spreadeth forth his hands to swim: and he shall bring down their pride together with the spoils of their hands. [12] And the fortress of the high fort of thy walls shall he bring down, lay low, and bring to the ground, even to the dust.
See All...) - The Children of Sheth (Numbers 24:17I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
See All...) - Some commentators link these people to the “tumultuous ones” of Jeremiah 48:45They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon because of the force: but a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and shall devour the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones.
See All.... - There is, however, a reference to a man named Sheth in scripture (1 Chronicles 1:1Adam, Sheth, Enosh,
See All...). - I believe this is a reference to all of the people living. Consider that Adam had two sons other than Able who was slain: Cain and Seth. We know from scripture that a flood occurred in Genesis 6-8 that wiped out all but Noah’s family. Noah came from the line of Seth or Sheth. Everyone living today would be traced back to the line of Seth.
- The Possession of Edom and Seir (Numbers 24:18And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly.
See All...) - Possessions for His enemies
- Edom will be judged (Isaiah 63:1-4 [1] Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.
[2] Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?
[3] I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.
[4] For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.
See All...). - Seir is in the country of Edom (Genesis 32:3And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
See All...). - The Dominion of Israel (Numbers 24:18-19 [18] And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly.
[19] Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.
See All...) - Israel shall do valiantly.
- He shall have dominion.
- He shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.
- THE PROPHECY CONCERNING AMALEK (Numbers 24:20And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, Amalek was the first of the nations; but his latter end shall be that he perish for ever.
See All...) - His Beginning
- The first of the nations
- Probably in reference to being the first to war with Israel (Exodus 17:8Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.
See All...) - His End
- His latter end
- It is almost as though there were two ends to Amalek.
- Israel, under the leadership of Saul, was supposed to put an end to them but did not (1 Samuel 28:15-18 [15] And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.
[16] Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?
[17] And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David:
[18] Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.
See All...). - Agag the king was spared.
- Haman from the Book of Esther is a descendant of Agag (Esther 3:1After these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.
See All...). - The Lord thus signifies that their latter end will be when they perish forever.
- He shall perish for ever.
- THE PROPHECY CONCERNING THE KENITES (Numbers 24:21-22 [21] And he looked on the Kenites, and took up his parable, and said, Strong is thy dwellingplace, and thou puttest thy nest in a rock.
[22] Nevertheless the Kenite shall be wasted, until Asshur shall carry thee away captive.

- A son of Shem (Genesis 10:22The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram.
See All...) - Came from the land of Shinar (Genesis 10:8-10 [8] And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.
[9] He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.
[10] And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
See All...) - Built the city of Nineveh (Genesis 10:11-12 [11] Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah,
[12] And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city.
See All...) - Possibly connected to Assyria
- Quite possibly connected to the Assyrian which is another name for the Antichrist (Isaiah 30:31For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod.
See All...; Micah 5:5-6 [5] And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men. [6] And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.
See All...) - Consider also the mention of ships from coast of Chittim (Numbers 24:24And ships shall come from the coast of Chittim, and shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber, and he also shall perish for ever.
See All...) and the mention of Chittim again with the Antichrist (Daniel 11:30-31 [30] For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant. [31] And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.
See All...). - Eber
- From the line of Shem (Genesis 10:22The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram.
See All..., 24) - Grandson of Arphaxad (Genesis 10:24And Arphaxad begat Salah; and Salah begat Eber.
See All...) - Son of Salah (Genesis 10:24And Arphaxad begat Salah; and Salah begat Eber.

Chapter 25
The Whoredom of God’s People
- ISRAEL COMMITS WHOREDOM (Numbers 25:1-5 [1] And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
[2] And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
[3] And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.
[4] And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.

[13] But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves:
[14] For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:
[15] Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice;
[16] And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods.
[17] Thou shalt make thee no molten gods.
See All...) - Brought on by Balaam (Revelation 2:14But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
See All...) - Balaam taught Balak how to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel.
- The stumblingblock consisted of
- Eating things sacrificed unto idols
- Committing fornication
- Apparently Balaam loved the wages of unrighteousness so much that, even though he could not curse Israel, he determined to teach Balak how to get God to turn on Israel.

[7] And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
[8] And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
[9] And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
[10] And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
[11] Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
[12] Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
[13] And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
[14] Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.
