Scripture Passage:
Numbers 24:14-25; Numbers 25:1-18

Chapter 24:14–25 (Continued)

Balaam’s Last Prophecy (Continued)

  1. THE PERSON OF BALAAM’S PROPHECY (Numbers 24:17) (Continued)
    1. The Sceptre Out of Israel
      1. The sceptre is connected to a king and a kingdom.
      2. The sceptre of the Lord
        1. A kingdom that lasts forever (Psalm 45:6)
        2. Prophesied to the Son (Hebrews 1:8)
      3. Jesus Christ as the King
        1. Prophesied to come forth out of Judah (Genesis 49:10)
        2. King of the Jews (Matthew 2:2)
        3. King of Kings (Revelation 19:16-17)
    2. The Wise Men from the East (Matthew 2:1-2)
      1. How did they know?
        1. Two prophecies
          1. Daniel’s prophecy (Daniel 9:20-26) – provided timing
          2. Balaam’s prophecy (Numbers 24:17) – provided information concerning the person
        2. The location of these prophecies
          1. Daniel’s prophecy came in Babylon (Daniel 1:1-6).
          2. Balaam’s prophecy came on the eastern side of Jordan and he was a prophet from Mesopotamia (Deuteronomy 23:4).
          3. Both of these prophecies were provided and known in the eastern world.
      2. Why did they come?
        1. To worship the King of the Jews (Matthew 2:2)
        2. To worship their King (Numbers 24:17)
      3. What did they bring?
        1. Gold
          1. A type of royalty (Psalm 21:1-3; Revelation 14:14)
          2. A picture of the royal birth of the King of the Jews (Matthew 2:2)
        2. Frankincense
          1. A type of prayer (Revelation 8:3-4; Psalm 141:2)
          2. A priestly gift
        3. Myrrh
          1. A type of suffering and death (Mark 15:23; John 19:39)
          2. A picture of the sacrificial death of Christ
          3. I do not know for sure, but perhaps these men from the east understood about the death of this King because of Daniel’s prophecy (Daniel 9:20-26).
  2. THE SLAUGHTER OF BALAAM’S PROPHECY (Numbers 24:17-19)
    1. The Corners of Moab (Numbers 24:17)
      1. Partially fulfilled by David (Psalm 108:9-13; 2 Samuel 8:2)
      2. To occur again after David (Jeremiah 48:42-47; Isaiah 25:6-12)
    2. The Children of Sheth (Numbers 24:17)
      1. Some commentators link these people to the “tumultuous ones” of Jeremiah 48:45.
      2. There is, however, a reference to a man named Sheth in scripture (1 Chronicles 1:1).
      3. I believe this is a reference to all of the people living.  Consider that Adam had two sons other than Able who was slain:  Cain and Seth.  We know from scripture that a flood occurred in Genesis 6-8 that wiped out all but Noah’s family.  Noah came from the line of Seth or Sheth.  Everyone living today would be traced back to the line of Seth.
    3. The Possession of Edom and Seir (Numbers 24:18)
      1. Possessions for His enemies
      2. Edom will be judged (Isaiah 63:1-4).
      3. Seir is in the country of Edom (Genesis 32:3).
    4. The Dominion of Israel (Numbers 24:18-19)
      1. Israel shall do valiantly.
      2. He shall have dominion.
      3. He shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.
  3. THE PROPHECY CONCERNING AMALEK (Numbers 24:20)
    1. His Beginning
      1. The first of the nations
      2. Probably in reference to being the first to war with Israel (Exodus 17:8)
    2. His End
      1. His latter end
        1. It is almost as though there were two ends to Amalek.
        2. Israel, under the leadership of Saul, was supposed to put an end to them but did not (1 Samuel 28:15-18).
          1. Agag the king was spared.
          2. Haman from the Book of Esther is a descendant of Agag (Esther 3:1).
        3. The Lord thus signifies that their latter end will be when they perish forever.
      2. He shall perish for ever.
  4. THE PROPHECY CONCERNING THE KENITES (Numbers 24:21-22)
    1. His Strength (Numbers 24:21)

      2. They will be carried away captive by Asshur.
  5. THE PROPHECY CONCERNING ASSHUR AND EBER (Numbers 24:23-24)
    1. The Fierceness of the Coming Judgment (Numbers 24:23)
    2. The Affliction Upon Asshur and Eber (Numbers 24:24)
      1. Asshur
        1. A son of Shem (Genesis 10:22)
        2. Came from the land of Shinar (Genesis 10:8-10)
        3. Built the city of Nineveh (Genesis 10:11-12)
        4. Possibly connected to Assyria
        5. Quite possibly connected to the Assyrian which is another name for the Antichrist (Isaiah 30:31; Micah 5:5-6)
        6. Consider also the mention of ships from coast of Chittim (Numbers 24:24) and the mention of Chittim again with the Antichrist (Daniel 11:30-31).
      2. Eber
        1. From the line of Shem (Genesis 10:22, 24)
        2. Grandson of Arphaxad (Genesis 10:24)
        3. Son of Salah (Genesis 10:24)
  6. THE DEPARTURE OF BALAAM (Numbers 24:25)
