Chapter 4
The Work of Setting Forward
- THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE KOHATHITES (Numbers 4:4-20 [4] This shall be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation, about the most holy things:
[5] And when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering vail, and cover the ark of testimony with it:
[6] And shall put thereon the covering of badgers' skins, and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof.
[7] And upon the table of shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and covers to cover withal: and the continual bread shall be thereon:
[8] And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put in the staves thereof.
[9] And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and his lamps, and his tongs, and his snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it:
[10] And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put it upon a bar.
[11] And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put to the staves thereof:
[12] And they shall take all the instruments of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put them on a bar:
[13] And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon:
[14] And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, even the censers, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgers' skins, and put to the staves of it.
[15] And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.
[16] And to the office of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest pertaineth the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the daily meat offering, and the anointing oil, and the oversight of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, in the sanctuary, and in the vessels thereof.
[17] And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying,
[18] Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites:
[19] But thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden:
[20] But they shall not go in to see when the holy things are covered, lest they die.

[2] Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, after their families, by the house of their fathers,
[3] From thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter into the host, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.

[15] And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. See All...) - The ark of the testimony (Numbers 4:5-6 [5] And when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering vail, and cover the ark of testimony with it:
[6] And shall put thereon the covering of badgers' skins, and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof.
See All...) - Literal instructions
- Take down the covering veil and cover the ark of testimony with it.
- Put thereon a covering of badgers’ skins.
- Spread over it a cloth wholly of blue.
- Put in the staves thereof.
- Spiritual application
- The ark is a type of our Lord Jesus Christ and speaks specifically of the presence of God among His people.
- As such we see that the ark itself pictures the presence of God.
- The covering veil is typical of the body of flesh that our Saviour adorned while on this earth (Hebrews 10:20By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
See All...). - The extra coverings also point to the dual nature of Jesus Christ.
- Humanity (badgers’ skins) - The badgers’ skins were not beautiful. The color was drab and dull and more than likely the outside would show the wear and tear of the elements.
- Deity (cloth wholly of blue) – The color blue usually is typical of royalty or heaven. As such it is symbolic of the heavenly nature of the God-man. Notice that it says it was wholly of blue. As such Jesus Christ was completely God and completely man.
- The table of shewbread (Numbers 4:7-8 [7] And upon the table of shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and covers to cover withal: and the continual bread shall be thereon:
[8] And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put in the staves thereof.
See All...) - Literal instructions
- Spread a cloth of blue.
- Put thereon
- Dishes
- Spoons
- Bowls
- Covers to cover withal
- The continual bread shall be thereon.
- Spread a cloth of scarlet.
- Cover the same with a covering of badgers’ skins.
- Spiritual application
- The table of shewbread is a type of the word of God.
- The word of God is compared to bread in scripture (Matthew 4:4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
See All...). - There were 12 loaves of bread on the table (1 for each tribe) or 2 rows of 6. Our Bible is made up of 66 books.
- The covering of the table of shewbread bears much of the information concerning how we got our Bible.
- Inspiration - The cloth of blue shows that its origin and source are heavenly. The instruments such as dishes, spoons, bowls, etc., demonstrate that God used instruments to bring us the word and those instruments were the human penmen. (2 Timothy 3:16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
See All...; 2 Peter 1:21For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
See All...). - Preservation – Here the bread is said to be continual. We know from studying the scriptures that God has promised a continual word. Not a new word, but rather a preservation of the one He gave in the first place (Psalm 119:89For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.
See All...; Psalm 12:6-7 [6] The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. [7] Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
See All...). - The cloth of scarlet could be twofold.
- Sins are associated with scarlet in the Bible which demonstrates that the Bible is a book that condemns man by showing his sins.
- The blood can also be associated with scarlet and certainly the only thing that can cancel out the debt of sin is the blood. The blood is a central message from the beginning of the Bible all the way through.
- The candlestick of the light (Numbers 4:9-10 [9] And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and his lamps, and his tongs, and his snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it:
[10] And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put it upon a bar.
See All...) - Literal instructions
- Cover the following with a cloth of blue.
- The candlestick of the light
- His lamps
- His tongs
- His snuffdishes
- All the oil vessels thereof
- Put all of that within a covering of badgers’ skins.
- Put it upon a bar.
- Spiritual application
- The candlestick is a type of the Holy Spirit.
- It is He who illuminates us concerning the table of shewbread (the word of God).
- The candlestick here is wrapped up in a cloth of blue signifying it as deity and the presence of God.
- The candlestick is then placed inside a covering of badgers’ skins. This pictures that the presence of God in the future would be that of the Holy Spirit residing on the inside of the believer (the badgers’ skins is typical of our body) (John 14:17Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
See All...; Romans 8:9But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
See All...). - The golden altar (Numbers 4:11And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put to the staves thereof:
See All...) – the altar of incense (Exodus 40:26And he put the golden altar in the tent of the congregation before the vail:
See All...) - Literal instructions
- Spread a cloth of blue.
- Cover it with a covering of badgers’ skins.
- Put to the staves thereof.
- Spiritual application
- The altar of incense is a type of our prayers. Notice the simplicity of the packing of the altar (Revelation 8:4And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.
See All...). - This points to the ease by which believers will be able to come to God in the New Testament. Notice that it is merely the coming together of blue (deity or God) and badgers’ skins (flesh or man). Nothing is between.
- The instruments of ministry (Numbers 4:12And they shall take all the instruments of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put them on a bar:
See All...) - Literal instructions
- Put them in a cloth of blue.
- Cover them with a covering of badgers’ skins.
- Spiritual application
- This could be a type of the fruit of the spirit being placed within a man who is walking in the spirit.
- The altar (Numbers 4:13-14 [13] And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon:
[14] And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, even the censers, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgers' skins, and put to the staves of it.
See All...) - Literal instructions
- Take away the ashes.
- Spread a cloth of purple.
- Put upon it all the vessels.
- The censers
- The fleshhooks
- The shovels
- The basins
- All the vessels of the altar
- Spread upon it a covering of badgers’ skins.
- Put to the staves.
- Spiritual application
- The altar points to a place of sacrifice.
- Taking away the ashes may be symbolic of the fact that bulls and goats cannot satisfy God.
- The spreading of the purple cloth once again points to the deity of Christ coming to take the place of the bulls, goats and other sacrifices.
- The tools of sacrifice were then laid on the purple cloth, much like the cruelty of crucifixion and judgment of our sins was laid on Him.
- The covering of badgers’ skins could once again point to the fact that He (Jesus) was a man.
- The Burden of the Kohathites (Numbers 4:15And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.
See All...) - Do not touch (Numbers 4:15And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.
See All...). - Bear (Numbers 4:15And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.

- The oversight of
- All the tabernacle
- All that is therein
- The sanctuary

- The Protection of the Kohathites (Numbers 4:17-20 [17] And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying,
[18] Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites:
[19] But thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden:
