                     The Study of a Place

                      (Geographical Study)
  1. THE NAME OF A PLACE
    1. Occurrences in the Bible
      1. Chart every occurrence of the place.
        1. Remember to include every form and spelling of the place.
        2. Remember to include the various other names given to this place.
      2. Divide the occurrences based on the major sections of the Bible, books of the Bible, or chapters of the Bible.
      3. Give the first and last occurrence of the place noting any significance.
      4. Make a rough listing of all the references to this place in the Bible with notations.
      5. What other names does this place have in scripture?
    2. Place Name Meanings
      1. Look for the meaning of the name of the place in scripture. If you cannot find it directly in scripture several other resources will provide that.
      2. Is there any significance for this place's name to mean what it does?
      3. Was the place's name changed and what does each of the names mean? Is there any thing significant?
  2. THE TYPE OF PLACE
    1. Is This Place a Region?
    2. Is This Place a City?
    3. Is This Place a Town?
    4. Is This Place a Body of Water?
    5. Is This Place Earthly or Is It Not Earthly?
  3. THE LOCATION OF A PLACE
    1. Surrounding Places
      1. What places are said to be north of this place?
      2. What places are said to be south of this place?
      3. What places are said to be east of this place?
      4. What places are said to be west of this place?
      5. Keep in mind that when the scriptures mention that someone went up to another place, this does not necessarily mean they went north.  The Bible often gives terms like this in reference to elevation.

    1. Events That Occurred at This Place
      1. What major events occurred at this place?
      2. What other events occurred at this place?

      2. What events occurred that changed the residents of this place?
      3. What events occurred that changed the landmarks of this place?
  5. THE SPIRITUAL NATURE OF A PLACE
    1. The Worship
      1. What worship practices are connected to this place?
      2. Are the worship practices connected to this place godly or pagan?
    2. The Deity
      1. What kind of knowledge do the people in this place have of the true God?
      2. What is the name of the major deity connected to this place?
  6. THE PEOPLE CONNECTED TO A PLACE
    1. People Who Reside in a Place
      1. What people reside in this place?
      2. How does this change throughout scripture?
      3. Is this place known for giants or other supernatural beings?
      4. List the various people who have lived in this location during the various periods of history.
    2. People or Person Connected to the Name of a Place
      1. Is this place named after a person?
      2. Do this person’s descendants dwell in this place?
  7. FEATURES OF A PLACE
    1. Landmarks
      1. What are the landmarks established for this place?
      2. Are there changes concerning the landmarks of this place throughout Biblical history?
    2. Physical Features
      1. What mountains are located in this place?
      2. What bodies of water are located in this place?
      3. What is the elevation of this place?
      4. What is the makeup of this place (i.e., wilderness, dessert)?
    3. Emphasis of the Place
      1. What industry is emphasized?
      2. What crop is emphasized?
      3. Is this place known for certain animals?
      4. Is this place known for special weather?
      5. What special niche is this place known for?
      6. What important buildings are located in this place?
  8. MAKE AN OUTLINE
    1. Make an Outline for Preaching or Teaching.
    2. Make an Outline Containing Research of the Place.
      1. Its geography
      2. Its history
      3. Its culture
      4. Its spiritual nature
