Amos 0002 - Lesson 6

Chapter 9

Judgment and Restoration

  1. THE INESCAPABLE JUDGE (Amos 9:1-4)
    1. The Lord Stands upon the Altar (Amos 9:1).
      1. The Lord stands on the altar as an emblem of judgment.
      2. This is most certainly not any earthly altar.
    2. The Lord Gives the Command (Amos 9:1).
      1. The Lord gives instructions to smite the lintel of the door.
      2. The Lord gives instructions to cut the heads of the people.
        1. Note: Beheading will be a common form of execution in the tribulation (Revelation 20:4). It is interesting to note that an article published in 2004 cited the revival of beheadings among the Islamic faithful.
    3. None Will Escape (Amos 9:1-4).
      1. The Lord will slay the last of them with the sword (Amos 9:1).
      2. He that fleeth will not get away (Amos 9:1).
      3. He that escapeth will not be delivered (Amos 9:1).
      4. They will not hide in heaven or hell (Amos 9:2; Isaiah 2:12-22).
      5. They will not hide in Carmel or the depths of the sea (Amos 9:3).
      6. They will not hide in captivity (Amos 9:4).
  2. THE JUDGE IDENTIFIED (Amos 9:5-6)
    1. As the Destroyer (Amos 9:5)
      1. He touches the land and it melts.
      2. All the people therein mourn.
      3. The judgment will rise up like a flood.
    2. As the Creator and Sustainer (Amos 9:6)
      1. He built stories in the heaven.
        1. The Bible teaches that there are three heavens.
        2. The first heaven is the atmospheric heaven where the birds fly and is called the “open firmament of heaven” (Genesis 1:20).
        3. The second heaven is the starry heaven that we call outer space and is called the “firmament of the heaven” (Genesis 1:14).
        4. The third heaven is where God dwells and is simply called “heaven” in Genesis 1:1.  Notice also that Paul calls God’s dwelling place the “third heaven” (2 Corinthians 12:2).
      2. He founded his troop in the earth.
      3. He calleth for the waters of the sea.
      4. His name is LORD.
    3. Notice the Order of Occurrence.
      1. He first describes Himself as the author of destruction followed by the creator and sustainer.
      2. Israel needs to understand that the Lord will first sift them in judgment before He restores them.
  3. ISRAEL’S INCLUSION (Amos 9:7-10)
    1. Israel Loses Favor (Amos 9:7).
      1. The Lord’s care for Israel is likened to His care for other nations (Jeremiah 9:25-26).
      2. The Lord’s deliverance of Israel is likened to His deliverance of other nations.
        1. Israel coming out of Egypt
        2. The Philistines coming out of Caphtor
        3. The Syrians coming out of Kir
      3. Each of these nations was brought out of bondage only to have to return.
        1. The Syrians (2 Kings 16:9)
        2. The Philistines (Ezekiel 25:16)
        3. So it will be with Israel.
    2. Israel to be Sifted (Amos 9:8-9).
      1. The Lord’s dealing with the sinners (Amos 9:8)
        1. The eyes of the Lord are upon the sinful kingdom.
        2. The Lord will destroy it from off the face of the earth.
      2. The Lord’s dealing with His own (Amos 9:8-9)
        1. The Lord will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob (Amos 9:8; Isaiah 10:20-23; Isaiah 11:1-16; Joel 2:32; Zephaniah 3:8-20).
        2. The Lord will sift the house of Israel among all nations (Amos 9:9).
          1. Like corn is sifted in a sieve
          2. The least grain shall not fall upon the earth.
          3. This is similar to the Lord’s dealing with Peter (Luke 22:31-32).
    3. Some of Israel to Die (Amos 9:10)
      1. The sinners of Israel shall die by the sword.
      2. Those which say, “The evil shall not overtake nor prevent us”
      3. Consider the lot of the people of God in Egypt had they not heeded the words of Moses concerning the blood on the doorposts. Had they decided that no evil would overtake them, they would have lost their firstborn just as the Egyptians did. Perhaps something similar will come around again in the last days.
