Good and Comfortable Words (Daily Portion 10127)
Scripture Passage:
Zechariah 1:12-21 After seventy years of judgment on Israel, God is ready to speak good and comfortable words to the nation. The horns that have scattered them will soon be cut off.
What Does It Say?
- The Lord answered the angel with _________ words and _______________ words.
- The Lord has returned to Jerusalem with ____________ and His __________ shall be built in it.
- The “LORD shall yet __________ Zion, and shall yet ___________ Jerusalem.”
- Zechariah lifted up his eyes and saw four __________.
- Afterwards, the Lord showed Zechariah four _____________.
What Does It Mean?
- A single score equals twenty . How many years in “threescore and ten?” Read 2 Chronicles 36:19-21 [19] And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.
[20] And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia:
[21] To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.
See All...; Jeremiah 25:11-12 [11] And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. [12] And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the LORD, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations.
See All...; Jeremiah 29:10For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.
See All...; Daniel 9:2In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
See All.... What happened during these threescore and ten years? What is now happening at the end of this period of time? - Read verses 18-19. What do the four horns represent? Why do you think there are four of them?
- What do the four carpenters do with the four horns (v.20-21)? What does this signify?
What Does It Mean to Me?
- The Lord says, “I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy” (v.14). Jealousy is often considered a bad trait. What do we usually mean when we say someone is jealous? In what way is God jealous of His people? Are there ways in which it is good to be jealous? Explain. Look up the word in a dictionary and see how this compares with your answers.
- God is sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease (v.15). In another time, Amos complained about those who were “at ease in Zion” (6:1), who would “lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches” (6:4). Isaiah identifies women at ease as careless ones (32:11). Another interesting verse to read is Jeremiah 48:11Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent is not changed.
See All.... What is God talking about with these accusations? What is it that displeases Him? How are people guilty of being at ease today? What should we avoid in our own lives?
Proverbs 28:26
He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.
